chattius 2,527
cunning -> Walz Cunning is related to the german word können, getting knowledge in something, In old guild times an apprentice had to pay his master for being trained in a skill. When the time as an apprentice ended he had to leave town for 3 years and one day, gaining knowledge by traveling around to become a master himself. He was paid from day to day (french jour = day). So a Journeyman was a wandering craftman paid after a days work. In German speaking countries these wandering years are still done and called auf der Walz sein, being on the Walz. So if you ever wondered what this Waltz in Waltzing Mathilda is... It is the traveling of a journeyman with its wandering bag called Mathilda. We had several people on the Walz each year at our house. Bed and breakfeast in exchange for some work, like carving some ornaments into the wooden frame of our patchwork house, or repairing the frame,... Link to comment
Delta! 987
Walz -> Bachata If you travel in Latin America or South America it is literally an accepted fact that EVERYONE can dance. There is no question. It's just: Walk up to someone, take their hand and you're dancing. There is also not necessarily a flirtatious component to it. Obviously you can use dance to rev someone's engine. But in general it is a very safe, social conduct that everyone participates in. Link to comment
chattius 2,527
Bachata -> Capoeira A girl from Brazil gave lessons in latin dances and capoeira at the balette school in town. Our oldest was soon too big for balette which she started with a girl from her class. So she did classic dances. The way she learned capoeira was based on the lessons for latin dancing. We were the opinion that capoeira would be more useful for our daughter than judo or karate because it is less known and surprise is a big factor in self defense. Our was 10 when she saw this 13 year old video and wanted to train it. She has a very different way performing it. She is 196cm and most of it legs. So she has a very very long range for kicks, but because of torque she turns slower. In real combat she would be a counter fighter. 1 Link to comment

chattius 2,527
Kung Fu Fighting -> Kampfringen The central european fencing masters had books for fighting with weapons, shields and not much known: unarmed. The dutch Geesing won olympic gold in Tokyo and worldchampionship as first outside Japan. He brought old europeam grappling techniques into Judo and this surprised judoka from Japan. Kampfringen is older than Judo. The US Army book for unarmed fighting could be a copy from 500 year old books about european martial arts: Link to comment

chattius 2,527
sleeping bag -> Gulaschkanone The hill our house is build into has a sort of plateau. We placed four 8-people tents, dixie toilets, 15000litre water container, 20hp powersupply and a Gulaschkanone. The Gulaschkanone is a former field kitchen from east german army which was sold real cheap second hand after reunion. The field kitchen in geman use since 1892 was named Gulaschkanone (goulash cannon) because at transport the chimney is moved by 90 degree and then the chimney and the wagon looks like gun from horse artillery. Slang for a field kitchen is still Gulaschkanone, even they look different now. Some recipes like pea soup taste way better when cooked in large containers and big amounts. So my field kitchen finds lot of use at open door days at firefighters, big family meetings, or as this year the kids summer camp. Link to comment

chattius 2,527
Daenerys -> Wedding traditions Nobody in my family ever watched any episode of Game of Thrones. It was aired when I picked up kids at their sport halls. And the wedding dress, no chance to survive our local wedding traditions ;) In old times the exit of the church was blocked with a trunk by friends. The fresh married had to use a two-manpeople saw to free the exit. At other places other tasks were needed, but always the couple had to work together. At our wedding friends removed a wooden wheel from the horse carriage we used to drive to the monastry where we married. We had to attach the wheel. I had to lift the carriage and my wife mounting the wheel (because she was the daughter of a bike mechanic). Our friends probably knew that we trained using a two-man saw for a week and changed it a bit. There is a well hidden Super16 video from our wedding done with the Beaulieu of my older sister.
