chattius 2,536
America -> Martin Waldseemüller He did a map in 1507. The very first who did the Americas as a continent and named it so. he was choosing America and not Americus because Europa and Asia were named after women. Atque in sexto climate Antarcticum versus et pars extrema Africæ nuper reperta. . . . et quarta orbis pars (quam quia Americus invenit Amerigen, quasi Americi terram, sive American nuncupare licet) sitae sunt And in the sixth climate toward the Antarctic, the recently discovered farther part of Africa . . . and a fourth part of the world (which may be called Amerige, as if meaning "Americus' land", or America) are situated Nunc vero et hæ partes sunt latius lustratæ et alia quarta pars per Americum Vesputium (ut in sequentibus audietur) inventa est, quam non video cur quis jure vetet ab Americo Inventore sagacis ingenii viro, Amerigen quasi Americi terram sive Americam dicendam; cum et Europa et Asia a mulieribus sua sortita sunt nomina. But now these parts have been more widely explored, and also another fourth part has been discovered by Americus Vesputius (as will be heard in the following), and I do not see why anyone should justifiably forbid it to be called Amerige, as if "Americus' Land", or America, from its discoverer Americus, a man of perceptive character; since both Europa and Asia have received their names from women. 1 Link to comment

chattius 2,536
head -> Waldgirmes Not far from my birthplace Wetzlar. A former classmate is historian and worked on the place for years. Old roman sources state that there were new settlements east of the Rhine in Germany. But names and locations got lost. At Waldgirmes ruins of an settlement were found 2 decades ago. It was short lived because after the loss at the Varus battle in teutoburger forest the Romans left the place. Pferdekopf von Waldgirmes (German), the horse's head of Waldgirmes, is the remnant of a Roman-age statue. It was found in the year 2009 on a field close to Waldgirmes in the German state of Hesse. The head was buried 11 metres below the ground in a collapsed well shaft, hidden in a barrel, and had been found in the course of archeological excavation works of a former Roman settlement. Therefore most likely it belonged to an equestrian statue that stood on the forum of this settlement. The piece is 59 cm long, weighs about 15 kg, and has been carefully restored. It is considered to be one of the most important archeological finds in Germany.[1] For years, the state of Hesse and the landowner hassled about the compensation the owner was entitled to, until the district court of Limburg set it at 773.000 Euros. Since August 19, 2018, the horse's head is presented in the Saalburgmuseum. Link to comment
