Server lag today :(

Recommended Posts

Hi :D

Lately I am experiencing really bad lag. Last time when I joined an empty servers at arrival I had 15k ping - I cant belive that its normal.

Before this I doesnt had any real problems - at least no more than everyone else. I am on a 2 mbit line whats pretty stable so that shouldnt be a problem.

Strangely if I log in a lower difficulty with a low toon (bronze for ex.) problem vanishes almost entirely.

At the current state the game is almost unplayable - just after joining I suffer a 5-10 sec lag.

Damn lag splitted even my horse into 2 useless parts - while losing my precious max level Eothran Bridle.

Need help. Quick. I suffer without Sacred.

Do you have fastpath enabled or disabled?

Try to deactivate the windows QoS Manager

Make sure to shut down DL managers/file sharing tools..

Do you have a router/firewall? All ports forwarded correctly?

Are you using a proxy-server, or do you have LAN with more than one PC connected?

Btw, yes... even a sacred session without any other players on it could lag seriously, when it's running on the same machine with other, already lagging sessions too...

I'm no specialist for network etc

so sry, I can't really help you..

no one can't, we all experience those heavy 'lags' from time to time... :D

I have noticed that the servers just lately have been very unstable...many CTD's with people entering/exitting games, parying, it's actually pretty random and hard for me to pin down whats causing it but ;) it has seemed to get worse of late. I am now using a different connection (not my home one) and this is a faster connection (8meg or so I am told) and the lag last night whilst I was online was horrific. Many many CTD's for lots of players in Niob, JimmyP was on and off there many times with them.

I'm not techie as you'll all know anyways but has there been some change to the hosting of the servers or cut back on bandwidth? or something? :D

Boy oh boy

Was it bad or what?

I honestly don't know how to adress this because I feel that further attempts to get six or more peeps all up on one server could meet in even more early demises.

Anyone else have any feelings or comments on this?

Is there perhaps some times of the week when server lag is better than others?

Did anyone find that when we split up into smaller groups, the going was easier?

I don't think I've played lately with such a larger group of people before all in one group. Has anyone else here played in large groups lately and had better results?

Thanks!

I totally feel your pain Csaszar. It HAS been very bad. We had so much trouble during our Kamikaze Sunday game. And it was Bronze for crying out loud. We don't even have any leet uber mods going yet. For the most part it was 5 people in the same party. I've never experienced lag like that before and it seems for a little more than a week now that the servers have been exceptionally bad. Something definitely must be done. This is really not normal by any standard.

In regards to events it might be a good idea to be on the same server but not have everyone in the same party. We'll try that next time.

One other thought that occured to me is to make sure everyone adjusts their Data Flow settings to MODEM/ISDN. It's suggested to do this to reduce the chance of a CTD so maybe this could also be useful with regards to playing in a large party. If I understand the nature of this setting correctly then using MODEM/ISDN may also reduce the stress of the server trying to send data at high speeds.

For anyone not aware of this setting you can find it while in game by pressing Esc button - Options and in the options window it is at the bottom right. Or in the menu when you first start up the game.

Just a thought...

I would never have thought that telling the server my connection is slower would actually help speed it up. Going to try this and see if I see a difference.

BTW, I've been seeing pretty comparable lag quite often. I play most nights around 0000 to 0300 GMT.

(Maybe it's me?)

Hi :cow_white:

It seems things are back to normal now. I still have some lag but no more than *normal*.

I think it was a frightening but special router related problem which is solved atm.

Clan DA uses Teamspeak as a way to bypass lag caused by typing. For some reason, the lag workarounds remind me of Diablo 2's issues where using a Glide package was the best way to play the game. Oddly, D2's performance plummeted under every other video setting.

Gogo, it's been the same way with Clan DA's leveling sessions. My Battle Mage frequently encountered long lag situations, so it's possible that Teamspeak will not provide much of a benefit. The only way to address the lag is to create multiple server sessions. Depending on the number of players, that means either 2 or 3 servers ready for the next session.

Ok I try my best to explain what lag can cause - hope that it's understandable ^^

In fact the servers up to 99,5% are not "producing" the lag. It's definitly the customers pc. no I don't want to blame someone. I talked a lot to the devs, specially to the dev who does the network-code. It's the loading time of the textures, animations and everything around which causes in MP the lags -- the server delievers very fast all infos to the client, the clients have to load the stuff and here we have the prob.

8 users on a server - one with 512mb ram, the other with 2gb, next with ata-33 drive, another running other stuff in the background. this all causes different loading times -> the server can't deliever more infos to the clients because he has to wait for them. -> ping raises. For that there is a ping limit, the server than might throw out one client.

Unfortunatly, the client is not intelligent enough to stop loading stuff if he got the info that he doesn't load fast enough.

What you can try to speed up things a bit is to use an unoffical tool to extract the textures - link and how to use, can be send via pm, the extracted textures have a higher load priority then the package. this works not on all machines but on some. Nice sideeffect, if you modify a texture and give you that to your clanmates you can all see this modification - the others on the server who don't have that file don't see it. :P

Cheers!

PS: please - if I wrote not full understandable things, ask me first before gettin angry ! I'm not a native english speaker.

Interesting Pyx

Are you saying that a group of peeps all with great computers AND great connections has a higher chance of having a lower lagged game?

:P

p.s. Wow, the info on a texture extractor is interesting. Has Sacred Vault produced one yet?

heh, got it

you asked about "great pc and great connection" -- that's not really the point. in fact huge amount of ram (2gb as minimum) and a diskdrive as fast as possible will help most. SATA-300 or SCSI 320 ^^

woah

yer saying that all I have to do is increase my ram to 2gig and I'll get better Sacred Performance? I had always thought that no matter how powerful our comps were, sacred would just...lol, keep playing like that.

In fact, I thought that max one gig pulled the most out of this game
