Fetch, if you may not have already guessed, is a friendly, four legged bot that goes to sites that could be of interest to the members, brings back news, then posts it in the forum he's been puppy-trained to leave them in. Fetch is house-broken, affectionate, but needs a bit of help when making his posts. When Fetch goes to Wired Gadgets, the only site he's been trained to seek out info at, he brings back not only a link to the content, and the first few lines, but also attempts to bring back links that always show up broken in the post he puts up.

Bad Fetch

Since Fetch is here on parole for only a month to see if the community enjoys the type of news he brings back and if him and his posts are of interest to our community, he needs some help with making his posts look friendly and interesting to the community. He's only made two posts so far, and both have appeared with:

1-link to the entire content he brings back

2-part of the content as a teaser

3-broken links (These are the bad things he brings back! :Just_Cuz_21: )

Please help Fetch out, and go into his posts to get rid of the broken links so that only:

1-link the the entire content remains

2-part of the content as teaser remains.

With our help, and his continued Dogged determinedness, we're hoping that this kind of news, or in fact any other type of news that any of you think would be of interest to the community and that can be taught to Fetch to...fetch... could be another new not of interest on the site.

He likes treats, some care, but most especially an attention to the broken links he keeps wanting to bring in, that we can all help out by erasing them.

He's a good l'il doggy and just wants to do the right thing.

He especially likes to be scratched behind the ears, and knows that if he's liked well enough after a month of hard work... he can hopefully win himself a home here at DarkMatters.

So...

Welcome to DarkMatters Fetch...

Good boy!

p.s. on a serious note folks, what do you think? He's been her a month now and we keep trying to fine tune him so that he doesn't bring back too much stuff, the stuff he brings back remains organized and... that he stays here ONLY as a way of briging us topic starters...if you guys find this of value? If the community here has problems and with an element like this being on the site, we'll send Fetch back to the puppy mill after discussion, we will always prioritize the community first.

:) Oh Gogo, I hadn't seen this thread earlier, I actually thought Fetch was real, was a spammer and a real geek posting on and on about gadgets

So did I

Does everyone think he's okay? He not gettin on anyone's nerves yet?

I've tweaked him a bit so he only "fetches" once a week...it kinda turns him into a random christmas present sorta thingy that we never know what he's gonna find.

:)

Ghehe as others have mentioned alredy, yeah idd, I, too thought he was a tech nutter  lol

But gogo, good thing you've turned him down a bit. He was posting 2+ threads each day, that was a bit too much. And there are other sources of tech information as well...

Timo, I"m glad to know that you especially are okay with him...as you do like Technology and I especially did not want Fetch competing with a real person's interests at DarkMatters.

In fact, I'll even go so far as to say that if if evenon one regular poster here has a problem with him I'd be quick to leash him permanently.

In fact, it was some of your suggestions on this forum about him in some post a while back that made me create a forum just for posts made by him.

Do you think that was a good idea?

Do you think there is another way this could be organized?

Now that he's pretty much only doing one post a week...perhaps he can be allowed to post with the real humans in their forum?

If you guys have suggestions, we'll put them in play.

OK I know I am somewhat of a tech nut, although since I've upgraded my graphics card things have been turned down to a less obsessive level :4rofl:

But the thing is: I keep an eye on 2-3 other sites regularly for tech news. So sometimes the news Fetch brings us is already... "old" to me.

However, seeing him dig up nice gadgets is quite fun :D

A recap on my experiences with Fetch:

  • The numerous threads from "Wired Gadgets" posted every day got old really quick. Thank god you made it stop posting that, it was annoying to see 4 new threads per day all from WG.
  • Now, the news comes in a more "dosed" style. I like it
  • but well why did you have to create a separate section for it? I forget it's there everytime I visit :P
  • IMO, one of the best tech related news sites (and PC related news in particular) is www.fudzilla.com, having both software and hardware news. You can subscribe to it's RSS feeds. Now I don't have a clue how that shizzle works, but maybe this can be integrated with Fetch's digging abilities? (And if anyone's wondering, there are other sites out there, I know, but those mostly focus on either PC hardware or specificly on a certain type of hardware.)

Oh and is it possible for you to get Fetch to repeat posting in a single thread? That way it reduces the amount of topics made.

You know, we'll call it "Go Fetch" or something, and it contains all the automatically generated news :)
