Till mid january we greet people we see the first time for the new year with a 'Prosit Neujahr' with the meaning: I hope that the new year will be a good one for you. So the wishing is normally in the begin of a new year and not the end of the last.

Kids use seeds of four-leaf clover in advance to have small clover plants ready for new year. The plant is decorated with other little selfmade symbols which are said to bring luck: chimney cleaner, lady bugs, horse-shoes, toadstool ...

Moms, grandparents will be visited if living close the morning of 1st january and the luckbringers for new year handed to them.

Lovely tradition, chattius.. in our family we like to give one of every denomination (in Sri Lanka) to a smaller child or nephew... some bills for "for luck" first ones they spend in the New Year

Prosit Neujahr  -> Prosperity

If the egg is too big the family is too small. Geese eggs actually taste better than chicken eggs if the geese are living free. They feed mainly on vegs so the geese egg fits perfectly for an omelette made with vegs,

omelette -> Stephanie

Omelette Stephanie, Austrian style. Grandgrandma was from the Alpes,

hubba bubba -> wild sorrel

As a young kid there were several common sorrel plants along the road when I walked to the school bus - but no shop which could have sold chewing gum. Grandma told us to use only a single leaf from a young plant and not to swallow it.

Grandma was 16, close to 17, at the end of WW2. She wanted to study medicine and had to work as a nurse in a hospital. She was send into an army hospital at the eastern front. The army got trapped at the coast of the baltic sea. She needed half a year to return, fleeing over the frozen sea, hiding in forests, living from the surroundings. She was a living lexicon about plants.

When we were young she taught us how to make tasty meals from vegs and mushrooms: young nettles, dandelions, sorrel, ... She always feared another war without supply for the people.

wild rice -> hoovercraft

There was a rice farm in our state which used a hoovercraft for sewing and controlling the rice. Man-power in germany was too expensive for rice so they are know keeping water buffaloes.

s'mores -> banana bread

A slice from a self-made whole grain bread, Nutella smeared on it, then banana slices, then some hacked nuts... Sunday morning favourite of the twins

Crunchy parts, sweet parts, fruit parts, ... Since they are growing and active the bit sugar is burned away quickly.
